Are you serving cupcakes at your next party? This is an inexpensive way to create a cupcake tower using items easily available. I used items I already had on hand, but if you need to purchase, I would say you could get everything for less than $6. That sure beats buying a $50+ stand that takes up space in your kitchen. Raid your pantry and closet and see what boxes you can find! You can recycle the boxes when your party is over.
You will need:
3 cardboard pizza boxes (small, medium, large). I used a Tony's pizza box for my top tier, but it wasn't very stable. Use the thick cardboard boxes from your next pizza take-out night for the best results. Some pizza places will let you purchase boxes.
3 separator boxes (dimensions that look nice with your size of pizza boxes). A wider base will ensure better stability. Also try to use the heavy cardboard boxes. Shoe boxes in various sizes would work nicely.
Ribbon
Tape (scotch and masking)
Hot glue
Wilton's fanci-foil wrap. This is usually available at Wal-Mart in their wedding/cake decorating section. I recommend using this to cover the pizza boxes, but you could wrap the separator boxes with wrapping paper or other decorative paper.
First, you will want to stack your boxes to make sure you are happy with the dimensions.
For extra stability, I recommend putting weight in the bottom of the separator boxes. Baggies of sand or small rocks should help.
Next, tape all boxes closed using masking tape.
Begin wrapping the boxes with the fanci-foil wrap, just as you would wrap a present. Use scotch tape to tape.
Measure to ensure your separator box will sit directly in the middle of the pizza box. Mark with a pen. This is the area you will put your hot glue, when you are ready to put the whole thing together.
Using hot glue, glue the wrapped boxes together to create a tower.
Decorate as desired! I glued some dollar store ribbon around the edges to dress it up a bit. These would make nice centerpieces for birthdays, anniversaries, parties, or even budget weddings!
Now all I need are some cupcakes.....YUMMY!! The amount of cupcakes you can fit on the tower will depend on the sizes of boxes you use.
I have been after hubby to make me a nice sturdy wood cupcake tower, but due to his lack of time it looks like it will be a while. This homemade version has pacified me for the moment!
